What is mobile plant and equipment insurance?

Plant and equipment insurance is designed to protect businesses that lease or hire equipment to other companies. It can cover many types of construction, manufacturing, and agricultural machinery including earthmoving equipment, excavators, forklifts, tractors, and generators.

You provide essential equipment to the construction industry. But what happens if improper maintenance on your end causes property damage for your customer? Plant and equipment insurance can help you protect your business and your fleet.

Hired-out plant and equipment

Why should I consider plant and equipment insurance?

Plant and equipment insurance helps cover the cost of claims, so you’re not left paying the bill on your own. The places where your equipment is used are often unpredictable. Accidents happen, no matter how safe the work site, warehouse, or project. Injuries, theft, and property damage are common. Plant and equipment insurance could mean the difference between staying in business or being forced to close up shop.

Cover that grows with your business

We offer plant and equipment cover with Public & Products Liability limits up to $20 million. Policies can be customised to meet your business needs.

Cover levels to choose from

  • $5M
  • $20M

Underinsurance

We know it’s tempting to select a lower level of cover to reduce premiums, but this can leave businesses shocked and insufficiently covered when making a claim.

Ways underinsurance catches business owners out:

Inflation

With inflation, the cost of living and doing business increases. Remember to over yourself, your tools and assets for the rising costs of replacing or covering them, not what you paid for them – you may be surprised at the difference.

Not covering the full cost of your risks

If you select cover levels for less than the value you may be found liable – left out of pocket when it comes to claims time. It’s important to review your risks and determine how much you will need to cover any claim that may come your way.

Is plant insurance a legal requirement?

Plant insurance is not required by law, but it is a common part of most contracts. If you hire plant and equipment, the rental contract will generally require that your equipment is covered.

Can equipment be covered while being transported to and from a site?

Yes. Goods in Transit, an optional cover available through a Business Insurance Package, can protect your equipment while it is transported to and from a site. It can cover equipment that is being transported via flatbed or other vehicles/conveyances. It’s important to note that Goods in Transit policies do not cover registered and/or self-propelled equipment that can be driven themselves. You should always refer to the policy wording to determine if your specific equipment or tools are covered.

What is the difference between dry hire and wet hire?

Wet hire is the leasing of heavy machinery with a trained operator. Dry hire is leasing just the machinery, without an operator. (Please note: BizCover does not offer insurance for dry hire.)

How do I get Certificate of Currency?

BizCover makes it easy for mobile plant and equipment businesses to show that they are covered. A certificate of currency is instantly emailed to you after you’ve purchased a policy. You can also download additional copies through our customer portal.
