Personal Accident and Illness Insurance vs. Income Protection: What’s the Difference?

Personal Accident and Illness Insurance vs. Income Protection: What’s the Difference?

Summary

  • Personal Accident & Illness insurance and Income Protection insurance are both designed to provide financial support if you’re unable to work due to illness or injury, but they work in different ways.
  • Personal Accident & Illness insurance generally provides fixed weekly benefits and may include lump sum payments for permanent disability or death.
  • Meanwhile, Income Protection insurance typically replaces a percentage of your income over a longer period.
  • Choosing between Personal Accident & Illness insurance, Income Protection insurance, or both depends on factors such as your occupation, financial commitments, budget, and the level of cover you’re seeking.

Your ability to earn an income is one of your most important assets, especially if you’re a small business owner, sole trader, or contractor without access to paid leave or employer benefits.

If illness or injury prevents you from working, the financial impact can be immediate.

Two types of cover are commonly considered to help manage this risk: Personal Accident insurance and Income Protection insurance. While they serve a similar purpose, they work in very different ways.

In this guide, we break down how each type of cover works, their key differences, and what to consider when deciding which option may suit your situation.

What is Personal Accident and Illness insurance?

Personal Accident and Illness insurance provides a weekly income benefit if you’re unable to work due to an accidental injury or illness, once signed off by a medical practitioner for a set period of time.

It may also include benefits if, as a result of the injury or illness, you become permanently disabled or pass away.

Personal Accident and Illness insurance is commonly taken out by small business owners and sole traders. It acts as a safety net to help cover everyday expenses while you recover.

What is Income Protection insurance*?

Income Protection insurance provides a regular monthly income (for example 75% or 90% of your re-tax income) if you’re unable to work due to illness or injury. These payments are made in regular instalments, similar to a wage, and continue until you return to work or reach the end of your benefit period.

Depending on the policy, this benefit period may be set for a number of years or extend up to age 65.

Key differences between Personal Accident and Illness insurance and Income Protection

The main difference is that Personal Accident insurance provides fixed benefits, including lump sum benefits for covered events such as death and permanent disability, as well as benefits for temporary disablement. Meanwhile, Income Protection replaces part of your income.

There are also important differences in the policy type. PA&I is usually sold as general insurance, while Income Protection is typically sold as life insurance. Because PA&I is general insurance, the insurer can cancel the policy or choose not to renew it in certain situations. Income Protection policies are generally guaranteed renewable, provided you keep paying premiums and were truthful when applying.

Another key difference is the level of cover. Income Protection offers broader coverage and is built to support you over a longer period of time. It also involves more detailed underwriting, which can include health questions and medical assessments. PA&I insurance, by contrast, covers accidental injury and specified illnesses and provides a fixed benefit amount.

Do I need both Personal Accident and Illness insurance and Income Protection insurance?

Whether you need Personal Accident and Illness insurance, Income Protection, or both will depend on your individual circumstances, including your work, your budget, and the level of financial support you want if you are unable to work.

You may wish to consider Personal Accident and Illness insurance if you work in a physically demanding or higher-risk role, are self-employed, a sole trader, or contractor, and do not have sick leave or workers compensation to fall back on. It may also be worth considering if you want a simple, affordable safety net to help cover day-to-day bills while you recover.

You may wish to consider Income Protection insurance if your ability to earn an income is central to meeting ongoing commitments such as a mortgage, rent, or family expenses. It may also be an option if you want cover that replaces a percentage of your income and are looking for broader, longer-term support if you are unable to work for an extended period.

For some people, it may be worth considering both. Personal Accident and Illness insurance can provide more immediate support, while Income Protection may offer longer-term financial security.
