International Women’s Day Customer Spotlight: The Green Emporium

In celebration of International Women’s Day, we’re putting a spotlight on some of the amazing female small business owners that we are privileged to call our customers.

A small business owner with a strong influence from family, Kristina Barton is the proud owner of The Green Emporium – a unique botanical store that specialises in terrariums. Setting themselves apart from other floral businesses, they offer a range of ready-made and custom terrariums; miniature, self-sufficient gardens planted inside enclosed vessels.

In addition to being the store owner, Kristina is also a qualified florist who regularly displays in the annual Perth garden festival. Kristina’s store offers a variety of plants and botanical gifts as well as in-store workshops and flowers for weddings.

When asked what inspired her to start her business, Kristina cites her grandad as a major inspiration. From him she learnt an appreciation for the natural and the odd, as well as a strong reassurance to pursue what she loved.

“He loved everything about the planet and found beauty in things most people wouldn’t look twice at.”

As the owner of her own business, Kristina appreciates the flexibility that working for herself offers, saying that “Living life the way I choose is definitely the best thing about my job.” She also believes being her own boss creates accountability and that is a strong incentive.

“Knowing that I am my own boss and that I must answer to myself…This makes me very accountable for my own success and drives me to push myself and build a future.”

Being a small business owner has empowered Kristina and as a mother, she enjoys being able to set an example for her children, showing them that “anything is possible if you are willing to put in the hard work.”

Family is constantly an important part of Kristina’s life, as she calls her mother the most inspiring role model in her life. From important life skills and attributes to practical skills for running her business, Kristina says watching and learning from her mum “began my love affair with also creating art…”

“Without a doubt, my mother is the most inspiring women in my life. Not only has she shown me how to be a patient, selfless, loving mother, but she has taught me to use my hands for many of the skills I use in my business.”

In celebration of International Women’s Day, we asked Kristina what advice she would give to other aspiring, female business owners. She succinctly states that all they need is passion and knowledge: “If you love what you do and do it well, people will respond to it.”
