International Beer Day Customer Spotlight: Hooked On Brewing & BBQ

Attention beer lovers, an important day has hit our calendars, yes, its International Beer Day. To celebrate, we wanted to showcase some of the fine work one of our customers is doing in the lucrative business of beer.

Operating out of the Northern Rivers region in the town of Ballina is Hooked on Brewing & BBQ. As the name suggests, it is the one stop shop for all things beer and barbeque.

Founder, Jay Morgan, was growing frustrated with the lack of home brewing and barbeque specialty stores in his hometown of Ballina, and so decided to take it upon himself to fill the gap in the market. Having a strong background in retail and wholesale, combined with his robust product and industry knowledge, Jay found the confidence to go out on his own and pursue his passion.

Despite being a home brewing and barbeque specialty store, Hooked on Brewing & BBQ will also provide you with the means to make your own spirits, wine, cheese, jerky, sourdough, sausages and plenty more. The store also boasts a wide array of barbeque essentials one would need to perfect their cook up at home, and should you want a particular item that you can’t find in store, Jay assures they will get it in straight away. For those who aren’t Ballina locals, don’t fret, they send freight all over the country twice a day so Jay asks that you give them a call and he’ll gladly get you sorted.

When asked what his favourite thing about his job is, Jay said it is, “without a doubt knowing that every single minute you put in is for you and your family.” He also describes the feeling of getting a successful outcome from a decision he’s made or an idea he’s come up with, as “unexplainably satisfying!” He finished by saying that “every bit of extra effort or that occasional weekend of extra work is all going to pay off one day and only our family will see this.”

Not only do Hooked on Brewing & BBQ sell the best homebrewing and barbeque gear, they’ll teach you how to do it too. If you follow them on their Facebook page you’ll see they frequently have beginners classes ranging from beer making to cheese making.

The cheese making class has proven to be quite popular

To celebrate International Beer Day, Jay said he’d be visiting one of the local microbreweries in Ballina, Seven Mile Brewing Co. He highly recommends his favourite brews of theirs, the summer ale, session IPA and the gold medal IPA.

When asked what advice he would offer to those looking to start their own business, Jay had these nuggets of wisdom to share: “Do your research, assess your target market, look inside and outside the box and then GO FOR IT! It is a huge amount of work and at times you will think ‘what have I done’ but I can assure that in as little as six months you will start to see it all coming together!”

For our readers, Jay and the rest of the crew at Hooked on Brewing & BBQ want to offer 15% off storewide to all customers who call up or come in and mention BizCover!
