Carpenters and joiners represent a significant portion of the construction workforce in Queensland. There are more than 148,000 carpenters and joiners across Australia, with approximately 22.1% of the total trade workforce concentrated in Queensland. This number highlights the importance of the trade in the Sunshine State’s construction landscape.
But while there are plenty of opportunities in Queensland and across Australia for carpenters and joiners, there are risks that come with the trade. That’s where business insurance can help.
QLD carpenters insurance requirements
In Queensland, carpenters and joiners may require a licence depending on the type and value of the work they perform. The Queensland Building and Construction Commission (QBCC) regulates licensing for carpenters in the state.
You may need a QBCC trade contractor licence if you:
- Perform carpentry work valued at over $3,300 (including labour and materials).
- Work as a subcontractor or contractor in carpentry.
- Operate a carpentry business or provide services to the public.
Carpenters and joiners may also be required to take out insurance in some circumstances. Most residential building work in Queensland valued at more than $3,300 must have cover under the Queensland Home Warranty Scheme. However, there are some exceptions. To find out more information, it’s best to contact the QBCC.
While other forms of insurance for carpenters and joiners are not mandatory in Queensland, it still may be a good idea to consider business insurance to protect your livelihood and reputation.

Professional Indemnity insurance
As a chippy, it’s likely you’re often called on for your professional advice in guidance. This may be from a commercial client looking for help on how to install their new kitchen cabinetry; or it could be from the foreman on that day’s job site.
Professional Indemnity covers you for losses claimed by a third party and defence costs due to alleged or actual negligence in your professional services or advice. This includes defence costs cover.
