How BizCover Helps Create Opportunity Through Art for People of All Abilities

One&All Hub is an inclusive space in Sydney that offers creative workshops designed for people of all ages and abilities living with disability.

“All programs are very much based around a holistic approach,” explains Karan, the Hub and Programs Support Coordinator at One&All. “We believe in focusing on mind, body and soul at the same time. So the program every day has a similar structure, which is a combination of activities that excite your brain and help it grow, strengthen your body and nourish your soul.”

These kinds of experiences can also be utilised outside the Hub, teaching participants valuable, lifelong skills.

Each day at One&All Hub is built around a similar routine. First, the day will begin with workshops based around wellbeing and mindfulness, such as art therapy or meditation. This would be followed by a mobility and fitness workshop, then cooking and life skills. The daily program also includes visual arts and crafts workshops, such as Claymates

Sam runs the Claymates workshop and has been a volunteer at One&All Hub for four years.

“I never thought I had the patience to run a workshop like this, but it’s absolutely delightful. And I’ve learned so much here at One&All,” says Sam. “It’s really rewarding. I’ve loved every minute.”

Claymates: More than simply playing with clay

As a proud charity partner of One&All, BizCover sponsors the Claymates ceramics program, continuing its commitment to making a meaningful difference in the lives of people with disabilities.

“This partnership is important for us because we are not only helping individuals express themselves, but Claymates also helps them to gain an understanding of entrepreneurship,” says Kanika Sharma, People and Culture Manager at BizCover.

Claymates is not the only social enterprise activity that BizCover has sponsored. Others include a cooking class, weaving class, and a barista class.

Kanika continues, “These workshops give people of all abilities the opportunity to explore entrepreneurship and turn a hobby into an income stream. Without access to workshops like this, people may never realise that they have a hidden passion and talent for something – like ceramics.”

A typical Claymates session

Sam explains that each Claymates session is a little bit different, and will also be part of the larger theme for that particular term. The theme for the current term is ‘Dreams.’

In each 45-minute session, participants use tools and techniques to shape earthenware clay. Pieces are fired in the on-site kiln, then painted and glazed before being sold as part of the Hub’s social enterprise program.

“There’s meaning in every step,” says Karan. “Sometimes things break, and that’s part of the process, too.”

But Claymates is about more than craft. It also acts as a space where participants can explore self-expression through art and build confidence.

Creativity help builds confidence

Jay has been a participant at One&All for roughly 18 months. He says, “Even when something is out of my comfort zone, I don’t mind pushing myself to participate because it’s such a supportive environment.”

As a naturally creative person, Jay says he most enjoys the art classes at One&All. But he also recognises that these workshops have helped him grow in more personal ways, too.

“I was preparing some artwork at the end of last year for a showcase,” says Jay. “And that process was quite empowering, which has pushed me to start doing more of those things outside of the Hub. I’ve just started doing a watercolour course.”

Sam agrees that arts and craft have the power to give people confidence and the ability to express themselves in new ways.

“I have seen participants who have gone from being completely withdrawn to creating extraordinary pieces, to having it influence their self-worth,” says Sam. For her, this is one of the most important aspects of running the workshop at One and All.

Shared values between BizCover and One&All Hub

The partnership between BizCover and One&All Hub is built on a strong alignment of values, particularly around community, opportunity and inclusion.

At BizCover, we understand the importance of creating spaces where everyone can thrive. Building inclusive spaces is not just a smart business choice, but it is also important for helping members of the community in with disabilities to flourish.

One&All’s inclusive programs provide a supportive environment where individuals of all abilities are encouraged to develop new skills and express themselves creatively. These are values BizCover believes in deeply, both as a business and as a member of the community.

“People with disabilities need to be a part of everything else that’s happening outside these doors [of the Hub],” says Karan. “This is important not just for our participants to understand that they are part of the broader community, but for the broader community to understand that people with disabilities are part of the community as well.”

However, there are still many barriers that people with disabilities face when trying to participate in the community or the workforce.

Supporting social entrepreneurs

Research from the University of Technology in Sydney (UTS) found that people with disability have a higher rate of self-employment or entrepreneurship (13.1%) compared to the country’s average (9.2%). In fact, people with disability are, on average, 43% more likely to be self-employed than other Australians.

This is why workshops like Claymates are important, as they can act as a gateway for participants that allows them to turn a hobby into a potential income stream.

“[Claymates] really is an amazing program,” says Sam. “We have various abilities within the program, but some of the Claymates participants have even gone on to hold down jobs and leave the Hub.”

“It’s about recognising potential and removing barriers,” adds Kanika. “Programs like Claymates give participants the tools, support and confidence to see themselves as creators, contributors, and business owners. That kind of impact goes far beyond the workshop walls.”

The importance of disability support services

Kimberley has been a participant at One&All Hub since 2024. When asked what she loves most about coming to the Hub, Kimberley says, “I love coming here, making everyone happy, making you guys cheerful, giving you hugs.”

Disability support services like One&All are incredibly important because they provide safe, inclusive spaces where individuals of all abilities can build confidence, form meaningful connections and access opportunities that might otherwise be out of reach.

“Ultimately, we want participants to feel empowered to follow their dreams and achieve their goals” says Karan. “We want to be the pathway that facilitates and provides support for participants to achieve their goals, whether that’s as an individual or as a business.”

With the right support, people of all abilities can find opportunities for growth, connection and self-expression.
