Congratulations First Steps Safe Steps, Winner of the Business Growth Program

BizCover recently partnered with Growth Potential, one of Australia’s leading small business growth specialists, to offer one of our lucky customers the opportunity to undertake a Business Growth Program.

Normally valued at $2,850, the Business Growth Program is for small business owners who are frustrated with their current growth, having challenges with their team, or perhaps feel like they have no time and are going through the same routine week in and week out. The program will involve a session of education and business planning to assess all areas of their business. Then together with an experienced business growth specialist, they will develop a clear month by month business plan for 2020.

The owner of First Steps Safe Steps and BizCover customer, Mitchell Brown, was the lucky winner of this package and we spoke to him about his business and what he hopes to get out of the program.

When did you open your business and can you give us a brief description of it?

First Steps opened in late 2014. The business is a complete baby proofing service. With our clients we complete a safety consultation of their home, provide a customised safety quote with recommendation of what requires baby proofing and then can complete the safety installation on the spot. We have recently added car seat installation to our service.

What inspired you to start your own business?

I was lucky enough when I was living in London to work for a baby proofing company.  I found the baby proofing work fulfilling and enjoyed educating and helping families about home safety. With my background in carpentry and the knowledge I gained from the London based company I wanted to bring this to Sydney. I saw there was a gap in the Sydney market and believed this style of business would be great for Sydney families who struggle with DIY nature of baby proofing and struggle to find the time to complete these kinds of tasks.

What is your favourite thing about being your own boss?

I enjoy that I have a business that I am passionate about. My previous job role didn’t give me the same drive and motivation. I also enjoy working my own hours, especially with a young family of my own.

What business problems do you want to solve through the Growth Potential program?

  • How to use marketing effectively and get our name out. Baby proofing is not a service everyone is aware that exists.
  • How to grow and expand the business, potentially add employees or franchises
  • How to use time and resources effectively as the business grows

Finally, what are you hoping to get out of the Growth Potential program?

Education on how to run the business effectively. Myself and my partner are not from a business background and would like to learn the skills and know the ways to build a successful and thriving business in the Sydney market, and potentially the Australian market.

We plan on touching base with Mitchell once he’s completed the program to get his thoughts on how it all went and what the future holds for his business. Stay tuned.
