BizCover recognised as a 2022 IB Top Insurance Employer

From offering flexible working conditions to championing cultural and diversity initiatives, BizCover has been named a Top Insurance Employer by Insurance Business (IB) for the second year in a row.

The business insurance Insurtech was selected in part by an anonymous employee feedback survey, which scored the company across a variety of metrics, including benefits, compensation, culture, employee development, and commitment to diversity and inclusion.

“We are thankful to have such an incredibly engaged and committed workforce, which is reflected by the fact we achieved the above-80% satisfaction rating from our BizHumans,” says Brad Miller, BizCover’s Co-Founder and General Manager.

“People genuinely want to be here and contribute to the success of the business. We’re a growing, dynamic company with a small business feel and I think that’s contributed to the success of our culture.”

Supporting a diverse workplace

At BizCover it’s all about visibility and understanding. The company’s first goal is to shine the spotlight on a wide variety of DE&I initiatives, making these projects always visible throughout the workplace.

Secondly and crucially, its other goal is to ensure its employees understand the importance of having a diverse workforce. Together this has intertwined diversity and inclusion into the very fabric of what it means to work for BizCover.

“We are proud of the fact that 50% of our executive team identifies as female,” says Miller. “This gender parity has extended down throughout our organisation with our workforce currently sitting at a 47% female and 53% male split.”

A few examples of initiatives BizCover has undertaken include partnering with Xceptional who help with the recruitment for people on the autism spectrum and other neurodiverse individuals.

This led to a group discussion with Xceptional centred around World Autism Awareness Day. Separately, the team has done another group talk with ACON – a program dedicated to promoting community health and diversity – about the importance of inclusion in the workplace.

“We also want to lead by example and embody the company’s values,” says Miller. “My great friend and CEO of BizCover Michael Gottlieb and myself dressed in drag for Mardi Gras as part of our Boss Meets Boss initiative, so we could not only talk about it but actually experience a different way of life.”

This has led to the launching of a program internally called BizEDI which raises awareness across issues such as equality, diversity, and inclusion.

Delivering a positive work-life balance

For many businesses, the Covid-19 pandemic has shifted the focus toward employee wellbeing and a more flexible work environment.

BizCover has been at the forefront of this within the insurance industry, quickly adapting and investing in technology so its employees could work remotely full-time during lockdowns.

A total of 31% of the BizCover team permanently work remotely because of this approach, with staff employed in every Australian state and territory.

“We’ve even got people working internationally now reflecting the international scope of our company,” says Miller.

“Whether it’s supporting people working in their home countries for extended periods or helping our team care for family members that are unwell, it’s a human business at the end of the day and we want to be there for our BizHumans.”

For the rest of the workforce, who mainly operate in the company’s headquarters in Sydney besides two smaller offices located on the Central Coast and New Zealand, the company has transitioned to accommodate a fixed hybrid work model.

“We believe having fixed days in the office presents an opportunity for collaboration, innovation and a bit of fun while still offering the benefits of working from home,” says Miller.

“From Friday drinks and ping pong tournaments to the recent End of Financial Year party where our team flew in from across Australia to enjoy some laser tag and bowling, we want to foster a relaxed and enjoyable working experience.”
