BizCover launches new cyber insurance campaign to tackle small business scams

  • BizCover highlights the everyday cyber threats that small business owners face in new Cyber Liability insurance campaign.
  • 43% of SMEs reported a suspicious incident or scam attempt, while 84% said they held no cyber insurance, have not checked their policy, are unsure what protection they hold, or did not realise that cyber insurance was an option.
  • SMEs don’t believe they are likely victims, but they can be easy targets for cyber criminals.

BizCover, Australia’s number one online business insurance service, is raising awareness about cyber attacks and liability through its new On The Go Cyber campaign, coinciding with October’s Cyber Security Action Month.

The new Cyber campaign features mother-daughter business owners, Fran and Frankie, confronting one of Australia’s most common cyberattacks, phishing. Both recognise the warning signs in the other’s message, but feel pressured to act when the threat concerns them.

The exchange illustrates how a simple message can put pressure on any small business owner, regardless of how tech-savvy they think they are. The campaign illustrates a scenario that is all too common within the small business community, such as a simple email or a text message.

Research commissioned by BizCover in July found that 43% of Australian small business owners surveyed had encountered at least one suspicious cyber incident or scam attempt in the previous 12 months.

Yet 84% said they held no cyber insurance, have not checked their policy to see if includes cyber cover, are unsure what protection they hold, or did not realise that cyber insurance was an option for their business.

Kristjan Smarason, Head of Marketing at BizCover, says the campaign aims to easily explain how urgency and simple link exchanges can influence everyday business decisions.

“Scams are nothing new for small businesses. However, our new BizCover campaign aims to raise awareness on the importance of cyber cover. More than half the small businesses we surveyed think their business is not big enough or their data is not valuable,” says Smarason.

Cyber risks appear to be underestimated by many small business owners, making them an easy target for cybercriminals.

“Having to stop trading puts a massive burden on small business owners, as their business is their livelihood. It’s important for them not only to take measures to protect themselves from attacks but also to be financially prepared if an attack happens,” says Smarason.

The campaign is another in-house production led by the BizCover Marketing team.
