Editorial guidelines

  • Word count: Submitted articles should be at least 1000 words, and no more than 1500 words.
  • Link policy: Links may be added as long as they are relevant and the context is organic.
  • Original and quality content: Articles must be original work and of a high standard of quality, and must not appear on other sites. We will not accept previously published pieces. Submitted articles go under review via http://www.copyscape.com/.
  • AI-written content: We do not accept content that has been written solely by generative AI (such as ChatGPT). Each article will be reviewed by AI checker software for quality control. See the heading below for more information on using generative AI.
  • Ownership: Once published, BizCover has copyright ownership to your content. It must not be subsequently published elsewhere.
  • Images: We will accept and publish images or graphs that are relevant to your article and support the content. All images must be owned and licenced by the person or body submitting the article.
  • Formatting: Documents in Word or sent as GoogleDocs are preferred. How-To lists and ‘top-5 reasons’ or ‘top 10 things to consider’ type articles are welcome, as well as articles broken up by headings in the form of questions.
  • Editing: All articles will be edited for grammar, punctuation, style and content by our team where appropriate. If articles are not up to a reasonable standard, they will not be edited or published.
  • Self-promotion: Content that is a sales pitch or obvious self-promotion will not be published.
  • Contributor compensation: We do not pay for contributed articles. We will, however, promote articles to our large community of small businesses across different channels and when appropriate. We do not guarantee that your article will be published.
  • Content we don’t want: We do not accept articles on adult content, gaming, drugs, religion or politics.
  • Inappropriate content: Submissions that disclose someone’s personal information, political agenda or contain offensive or discriminatory material will not be accepted. The publishing of content is entirely at the discretion of BizCover.

Generative AI best practices

We acknowledge that many of our contributors use generative AI (such as ChatGPT) to help them write content. However, we do not want content that is completely written by AI. This is because:

  • We want to hear from you! We value the people that make up the BizWitty community. Anyone can use AI to create content, but only you can tell us about your experiences in your own words.
  • Gen AI can make mistakes and errors.
  • Search engine algorithms can penalise web pages that heavily feature AI-generated content, which can seriously impact the viability of our website.

If you want to use AI to help you write content, then we have a few recommendations that may help. Before sending us your content, make sure you follow these steps:

  • Use specific, detailed prompts to get the most out of generative AI.
  • Try to use AI content as a guide to help you write in your own words, rather than just copying and pasting text.
  • Always fact-check everything when using AI and ensure the content it has created has not been plagiarised.
  • Run your content through an AI checker before sending it to us. You should aim for an AI score of no more than 7% AI content. We recommend that you use QuillBot, which is free to use. Your content will be checked again by us when we receive it. If the AI score is higher than 7%, we will not be able to publish your work.
