What these 4 small businesses are doing to thrive and survive during COVID-19

Written by Laura Tien

It’d be an understatement to say that COVID-19 has changed the way small businesses around Australia operate. At Workit Spaces, a Sydney-based coworking space, we’ve created a video series called COVID Reality. In each episode, we explore how small businesses in our hub have been coping with the pandemic.

These small business entrepreneurs explain what they’ve been doing to adjust to the changes. We showcase everything from businesses that are barely surviving to businesses that are thriving with new innovations. Make sure you watch the videos to see more stories!

Why Alcmena has had a boost in sales

COVID Reality – Episode 1 – Crisis

Alcmena is known for its eco-friendly, machine washable nappies. During the pandemic, their company has actually had a boost in sales. Many consumers are rethinking their habits and looking into how they can avoid stocking up. It’s great to be thriving during these times, but this does come with its own set of issues.

For one, Alcmena is aware that a lot of the orders have been from panic buyers. They have to consider how to adjust their operations after the pandemic. The small business has also faced supply issues. The increase in numbers has made it difficult to get orders out in time. Finally, Alcema talks about the importance of supporting other small businesses. For example, looking at local businesses instead of traditional suppliers.

Reminder: If you’re able to, look for other small businesses that you can support. In many cases, you’ll be able to build a mutually beneficial relationship. Helping each other stay afloat is crucial. As restrictions ease, we can help each other get back on our feet.

Dibble and their new focus on just surviving

COVID Reality – Episode 2 – Resilience

Dibble offers eco-friendly, plant-based condiments. Originally, the business saw rapid growth. Unfortunately, with everyone only looking to buy necessities during this time, they saw a substantial decrease in their sales. However, they’re still looking to keep people engaged with the brand.

Dibble hopes to stand out to their market. They’ve focused on building their brand rather than on sales. Rather than throwing in the towel, they’re shifting their ambitions and finding new ways to manage their business. Dibble is using this time to try new things.

Tip: It’s okay to have to shift your focus if your small business is going through a lot of change. Being able to cover your operational costs is a feat in itself. Try to build your reputation and make sure that existing and potential customers remember your brand when the economy starts picking up again.

Media in Action’s new marketing strategies

COVID Reality – Episode 3 – Survival

Media in Action is a communications agency focusing on social media and events. When they first launched last year, they were constantly taking on new opportunities. This year things started slowing down and they’ve had to pivot. Not only have they changed their strategies for the clients, they’ve also changed their tactics.

Media in Action have started to refine and personalise their approach for all of their clients. During these unpredictable times, each business needs a unique strategy. On top of this, Media in Action are delving into the world of Google Ads, something they never thought they’d do.

Tip: Remember that you don’t need to cut out your marketing function entirely even if you feel like you should cut costs and just focus on operations. There are always new tactics to try, no matter how much time and money you want to spend. It might be a great time to test, iterate and learn.

Snack Proud’s new innovation

COVID Reality – Episode 4 – Courage

If you watched the second installment, you would have seen the struggles that Snack Proud has gone through. They’re a healthy snack box company that’s been built on deliveries to corporate offices. However, with everyone working from home, their orders started dropping off.

Rather than giving up, Snack Proud strived to do something different. By doing home orders, they reached a new market. They’ve shifted their value proposition and are honing in on what customers want. Snack Proud has been able to update their website as well.

Reminder: When doors close, others open. Even though it’s difficult, it’s important to hold your head high and make the most of whatever situation you’re in. You might find that there are new things that are worth testing in this period. Talk to the people around you and don’t be afraid to ask for help.
